Dave Min Outraises Democratic Field In Q3

IRVINE, CA — Today, State Senator Dave Min reported raising $311,196 from July 1 to September 30 for his campaign for Congress in California’s 47th Congressional District. This is the third quarter of impressive fundraising for Dave Min, who reports no personal loans to buoy his total, or campaign debt. Min, who has shown a strong lead against likely Republican nominee Scott Baugh in the 20204 General Election in public polling, boasts a coalition of support that includes Congresswoman Katie Porter, SEIU California, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus’s political leadership ASPIRE PAC, and more than 125 local and state elected officials. California’s 47th is an open Congressional District in Orange County that is being vacated by Rep. Porter, who is running for U.S. Senate. The announcement comes a few months after a Public Policy Polling poll showed Min with a strong lead against his likely Republican opponent Scott Baugh in the 2024 General Election.

“Republicans have made it extremely clear: they’re gunning for CA-47,” said Dan Driscoll, campaign manager at Dave Min for Congress. “Dave Min has the track record and the experience to keep this seat in the right column–not just in 2024, but beyond. Orange County’s working families know that Dave isn’t the same old politician. When he makes a promise, he keeps it. Thank you so much to everyone who has put their faith in Dave and our campaign these past few months. This is the sort of grassroots support we need to keep this seat blue for the long haul.”

It’s important to consider the source of the funding as well. Notably, Min’s fundraising to date includes no money from corporate PACs and no loans from the candidate. Min has also signed the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge, and his list of donors reflects those commitments. Crucially, his campaign reports no debts.

Considering fundraising and endorsements in tandem tells a compelling story about Dave Min’s general election viability. Dave has consolidated support from local, state, and national endorsers. In recent weeks, Min has announced the recommendation of the Orange County Labor Federation, and endorsements from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 47, UFCW Local 324, Teamsters Joint Council 42, California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Attorney General Rob Bonta, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus’s political leadership ASPIRE PAC, more than 50 local Orange County government officials, and more than 60 state legislators. A full endorsement list is available here.

Dave Min is the Democrats’ most viable candidate in the race, having entered the contest with the endorsement of the outgoing incumbent Katie Porter. Min currently represents over 80% of the 47th Congressional District in the State Senate, and won CA-47 during that election by over 5% in 2020, a tough year for Orange County Democrats. Just after the end of 2023’s first quarter, former Congressman Harley Rouda ended his bid for the 47th, leaving Min as the only Democrat in the race with previous campaign, legislative or federal policy experience.

Senator Min, the only Korean-American in the state legislature, serves as Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and as Senate Vice Chair of the Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Min has proven himself an incredibly effective legislative leader in the Senate, authoring 16 bills signed into law by the Governor, including leading legislation on hate crimes, gun violence prevention, family safety, and women’s reproductive rights. In the wake of the 2021 Huntington Beach Oil Spill, he stood up to the oil industry and led efforts to end offshore drilling. Min serves as Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and as Senate Vice Chair of the Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. He previously chaired the Senate Cybersecurity Select Committee.

Before entering the State Senate, Min was a law professor at UC Irvine, where he taught and researched in the area of business law. He resides with his wife Jane Stoever, a UC Irvine law professor who specializes in domestic violence and family law, and their three children in Irvine. Dave is a native Californian, a product of California public schools who graduated from the Wharton School and Harvard Law School, and an Eagle Scout.

California’s 47th is an open Congressional District in Orange County that includes the Cities of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Seal Beach, and portions of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Woods. Incumbent Katie Porter is vacating the seat to run for U.S. Senate. In 2022, Porter defeated former Assemblymember Republican Scott Baugh by 3.44% in this “toss-up” district. State Senator Dave Min currently represents over 80% of Congressional District 47 in Sacramento. In 2020, Min received over 158,000 votes within CA-47, defeating incumbent John Moorlach by 5.15%. 19% of the registered voters in CA-47 are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, including one of the largest Korean-American populations in the country.
