Organized Labor Backs Dave Min For Congress
Irvine, CA – Today, Dave Min for Congress announced that the Orange County Labor Federation has voted to recommend the endorsement of his campaign by the AFL-CIO to represent California’s 47th Congressional District. This massively important announcement definitively cements Dave Min as the candidate of labor in this race, following months of key early endorsements from national, statewide and local unions, including the Service Employees International Union, the California Federation of Teachers, the Los Angeles Police Protective League, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Locals 47 & 441, Teamsters Joint Council 42, National Union of Healthcare Workers, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324, International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 36, and Orange County Employees Association.
“The Orange County Labor Federation is proud to recommend Dave Min for California’s 47th Congressional District,” said Gloria Alvarado, Executive Director of OCLF. “Dave is a fighter for Orange County’s working families. We are confident he can win this seat and fight for working families in Washington. We’re thrilled to work together in helping Dave keep CA-47 in our column.”
Chartered in 1929 by the AFL-CIO, the Orange County Labor Federation is the official regional body that brings together unions from different sectors to fight for decent wages, safe working conditions, strong communities, and upward mobility for our communities. The OCLF represents more than ninety local unions from every sector of the labor movement with a membership of more than 200,000 working members. The AFL-CIO is the largest federation of unions in the United States. It is made up of 60 national and international unions, and represents more than 12 million active and retired workers.
Min adds the Labor Federation to an impressive and diverse coalition of support. After entering the race with the endorsement of incumbent Rep. Katie Porter, Min has consolidated support from local, state, and national officials and organizations. In recent months, Min has announced the endorsements of California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Attorney General Rob Bonta, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, Insurance Commissioner Ricard Lara, Superintendent of Public Schools Tony Thurmond, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus’s political leadership ASPIRE PAC, more than 50 local Orange County government officials, and more than 60 state legislators. A full endorsement list is available here.
The OCLF’s recommendation is welcome support heading into 2024. California’s 47th is widely seen as one of the most competitive seats in the country. Incumbent Rep. Katie Porter defeated Scott Baugh last year by just over 3%. Baugh is the likely Republican nominee, and will face Porter’s pick in Dave Min next November, during a cycle where the national GOP has declared CA-47 their top target. But Dave Min is no stranger to tough races. He currently represents over 80% of the 47th Congressional District in the State Senate, and won CA-47 during that election by over 5% in 2020, a tough year for Orange County Democrats, defeating a long-time Republican icon who was thought to be unbeatable. Just after the end of 2023’s first quarter, former Congressman Harley Rouda ended his bid for the 47th, leaving Min as the only Democrat in the race with previous campaign, legislative, or federal policy experience.

California’s 47th is an open Congressional District in Orange County that includes the Cities of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Seal Beach, and portions of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Woods. Incumbent Katie Porter is vacating the seat to run for U.S. Senate. In 2022, Porter defeated former Assemblymember Republican Scott Baugh by 3.44% in this “toss-up” district. State Senator Dave Min currently represents over 80% of Congressional District 47 in Sacramento. In 2020, Min received over 158,000 votes within CA-47, defeating incumbent John Moorlach by 5.15%. 19% of the registered voters in CA-47 are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, including one of the largest Korean-American populations in the country.
