ICYMI: BAUGH REFUSES TO CONDEMN VANCE’S DESPICABLE COMMENTS

IRVINE, CA — In 2021, JD Vance said that women in violent marriages ought to stay with abusive partners for the sake of their children, a chilling addition to a string of  disturbing revelations concerning Vance’s views on women and families. Today, the LA Times and Orange County Register is reporting that those comments were made at an event at Pacific Christian, a charter school founded by CA-47’s Republican nominee Scott Baugh – who refused to address Vance’s disgusting comments.

A spokesperson for the school described the evening as “wonderful,” and that Vance and his comments were “well-received,” while Baugh refused to condemn Vance’s harmful insinuation or explain if he still supported the Vice Presidential pick in light of recent developments.

Sen. Dave Min had much more direct commentary. “Those comments were despicable. They are ignorant and reflect an extreme view of the role of women and women’s rights that we’ve seen come out of the far right wing of the Republican Party,” said Min.

The comments are just one more proof point showing an obvious trend: Scott Baugh has little to no concern for the health and safety of Orange County’s women and families. His emphatic support of the Trump / Vance ticket is out of step with voters in Orange County.

“Whether he’s comparing abortion access to slavery, imploring women to stay in abusive relationships, chastising Americans without children or casting himself as the poster boy of Trump’s disastrous Project 2025 agenda that would harm working families, (Vance) offers no shortage of terrible takes that voters will hold against both him and his MAGA extremist friends across the country — and down the ballot — this November,” said Dan Gottlieb, a spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Min has assembled an impressive coalition of support. In addition to being on the DCCC’s Red to Blue List of priority challengers for the House, Senator Min is endorsed by outgoing Rep. Katie Porter, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and over 50 local elected officials. He is also the consensus choice of Teachers, Police, Firefighters, and Organized Labor, with major endorsements including the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Police Officers Research Association of California, the International Association of Firefighters, SEIU, AFSCME, Teamsters, AFL-CIO, and the California Labor Federation.  California’s 47th is an open DCCC Red To Blue Congressional District in Orange County that includes the Cities of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Seal Beach, and portions of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Woods. Incumbent Democratic Representative Katie Porter is not running for re-election. In 2022, Porter defeated former Assemblymember Republican Scott Baugh by 3.44% in this “toss up” district. State Senator Dave Min currently represents over 80% of Congressional District 47 in Sacramento. In 2020, Min received over 158,000 votes within CA-47, defeating incumbent John Moorlach by 5.15% in this area. 19% of the registered voters in CA-47 are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, including one of the largest Korean-American populations in the country.
