State Senator Tom Umberg Endorses Dave Min for State Senate
Orange County, Calif. — TODAY, UC Irvine Law Professor Dave Min, who is running in California’s State Senate District 37 against anti-vaccination conspiracy theorist John Moorlach, announced his endorsement by State Senator Tom Umberg, who represents the neighboring 34th State Senate District, also in Orange County.
“Orange County families deserve a State Senator who will fight for affordable, high quality healthcare,” said Senator Umberg. “While the Trump Administration and its allies in Sacramento try to take healthcare away from millions of Californians, Dave will stand with us .”
Sen. Umberg, who like Prof. Min is a Democrat, won a longstanding Republican seat in 2018 in what was seen as an upset. His successful run was part of a broader “Blue Wave” that illustrated the changing demographics and values of Orange County, as the Republican Party has increasingly tilted towards being a party opposed to science, higher education, and economic fairness. He previously served in the California State Assembly, from 1990-94 and from 2004-06. Sen. Umberg is a decorated captain in the United States Army and served with the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea and with NATO forces in Italy.
“I’m honored to be endorsed by State Senator Umberg, who has been an incredible advocate for Orange County families and an outspoken leader for our military veterans,” said Min. “I look forward to working with him to ensure that California continues its leadership in expanding healthcare coverage and creating more economic opportunities for the most vulnerable among us.”
David Min is a University of California Irvine Law Professor, father of three, and a former economic policy staffer in the United States Senate and for the Center for American Progress. Min began his legal career at the Securities and Exchange Commission to protect the retirement security of seniors, turning down high paying jobs to serve the public interest. He is a leading economic expert whose research focuses on banking and housing policy.
California State Senate District 37 is located in Orange County and includes the communities of Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Foothill Ranch, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Newport Beach, Orange, Tustin, and Villa Park and is ranked by political handicappers as a “toss up.” The incumbent career politician John Moorlach, an unwavering Trump supporter and anti-vaccination proponent, was soundly rejected by a majority of voters in the March 3, 2020 primary election.
