AFSCME Endorses Dave Min

IRVINE, CA — Today, State Senator Dave Min, who is running to succeed Katie Porter in California’s 47th Congressional District with her full support, announced that he was being endorsed by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the 1.6 million employees it represents. Following the formal endorsement of the AFL-CIO last week–as well as the public support of teachers, laborers, and police–Dave Min has emerged as labor’s consensus candidate in this race.

“Dave Min has been a champion for working families his entire career,” said Alia Griffing, Political and Legislative Director for AFSCME California. “As an enforcement attorney at the SEC, he worked to hold Wall Street accountable. As a policy director for the Center for American Progress, he advocated for family-first economic policy. And as a State Senator, he has taken the hard votes to benefit the lives of California’s least well off. We are proud to join his coalition of support.”

As part of the AFL-CIO, AFSCME is one of the nation’s leading advocates for working women and men. Its 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen, and AFSCME believes everyone deserves a chance to fulfill the American dream. Their mission aligns with the work Dave Min has done throughout his career, and he is proud of his 100% rating from AFSCME California.

This announcement continues State Senator Dave Min’s incredible momentum, as he has racked up a slew of major endorsements in the past few months, including from the California Democratic Party, Equality CA, the Southern California Armenian Democrats, NeverAgain CA, PORAC, UFCW, IBEW, OCEA, NUHW, the Laborers, the Carpenters, and a host of others. Min is the unanimous choice of organized labor in this race, as he is the only candidate to receive support from national, statewide, and local unions. Min received early endorsements from Rep. Katie Porter, the outgoing incumbent, as well as from Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the California Federation of Teachers, and over 150 local, state, and federal officials. California’s 47th is an open Congressional District in Orange County that includes the Cities of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Seal Beach, and portions of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Woods. Incumbent Katie Porter is vacating the seat to run for U.S. Senate. In 2022, Porter defeated former Assemblymember Republican Scott Baugh by 3.44% in this “toss-up” district. State Senator Dave Min currently represents over 80% of Congressional District 47 in Sacramento. In 2020, Min received over 158,000 votes within CA-47, defeating incumbent John Moorlach by 5.15% in this area. 19% of the registered voters in CA-47 are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, including one of the largest Korean-American populations in the country.
