Dave Min Wins the Democratic Nomination for CA-47

IRVINE, CA — California State Senator Dave Min secured a decisive victory in Tuesday’s primary election, securing a top-two finish and sending a clear message that Democrats are ready to take back the House in 2024. Min’s triumph in Orange County not only underscores his resilience in a fiercely contested primary but also highlights his unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing concerns of Southern California families.

“I am deeply humbled and grateful for the support from voters across Orange County,” said State Senator Dave Min. “This victory is not just about winning an election, it is about the future we are collectively shaping. It's about reclaiming the House for Democrats and Orange County families. It’s about rejecting the divisive, Trump-supporting MAGA politics that our opponent, Scott Baugh, represents. It's about ensuring that our voices are heard loud and clear in Washington. I’m proud to be endorsed by law enforcement, fire fighters, teachers, nurses, and working families who I will fight for every day in Congress. Onwards to November!”

Min will face Republican Scott Baugh in November’s general election. Baugh has returned to the political arena after being rejected by CA47 voters in 2022. A career politician and right-wing extremist, he has consistently demonstrated a pattern of prioritizing his own personal interests while being influenced by MAGA donors and special interest groups, rather than effectively advocating for the needs of working families. Baugh has unequivocally voiced support for a nationwide abortion ban without exceptions, even in cases of rape, incest, or when a woman's life is at risk, and has opposed safeguarding same-sex marriage rights.

During his time in the State Senate – where he represented over 80% of CA-47 – Min shepherded 28 bills into law, including legislation enshrining abortion rights in the California Constitution, expanding protections for domestic violence survivors, banning gun sales on state property, and addressing the causes of our climate crisis. In Congress, Dave Min will defend reproductive freedom nationwide, crack down on corporate price gouging, fight to lower health care costs, and always put Orange County taxpayers first. Headed into November, Min maintains a strong advantage thanks to his record as a bipartisan problem-solver, his history of electoral success within this same district, and his ability to overperform with his Democratic base.

Min is endorsed by outgoing Rep. Katie Porter, as well as the California Democratic Party, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, California Environmental Voters, and over 150 local, state, and federal officials. Min is the unanimous choice of organized labor in this race, as he is the only candidate to receive support from national, statewide, and local unions, and he is the only candidate endorsed in this race by the California Labor Federation or the AFL-CIO.  California’s 47th is an open Congressional District in Orange County that includes the Cities of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Seal Beach, and portions of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Woods. Incumbent Katie Porter is vacating the seat to run for U.S. Senate. In 2022, Porter defeated former Assemblymember Republican Scott Baugh by 3.44% in this “toss-up” district. State Senator Dave Min currently represents over 80% of Congressional District 47 in Sacramento. In 2020, Min received over 158,000 votes within CA-47, defeating incumbent John Moorlach by 5.15% in this area. 19% of the registered voters in CA-47 are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, including one of the largest Korean-American populations in the country.
